iPhone 14 Pro Pre order and Release

The iPhone 14 Pro can be pre-ordered from Friday, September 9th. The actual iPhone release is September 16, 2022: Then deliveries will start and the iPhone 14 Pro will be available in stores.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro 2022 will be the year of the Pro models

Fast processor, powerful camera, always-on display: 2022 will be the year of the Pro iPhone. Here you will find all information about the iPhone 14 Pro.

At its keynote, Apple unveiled the new iPhone 14 cell phone series. Interesting: In the 2022 iPhone generation, really big innovations can only be found in the Pro models. In the following, the editors have summarized the information about the iPhone 14 Pro. In a separate article on the Apple Keynote 2022, we will give you an overview of all the highlights.

iPhone 14 Pro design and size

Apart from a slightly thicker case, Apple remains true to the angular stainless steel case introduced with the iPhone 12 Pro. As usual, there is a new color – this time purple (“Deep Purple”). The black variant has also been given a new look, appears as “Space Black” with a glossy deep black frame, the back is still matt and appears more dark gray due to the surface structure. The Pro series still stands for more muted, more serious colors, there are more bright looks in the standard model. As usual, the iPhone 14 Pro series comes with two display sizes:

  • iPhone 14 Pro: 6.1 inch
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 6.7 inches

The end for the notch

Every year Apple treats its new iPhone generation to a detail that connoisseurs can use to tell it apart from last year’s models. The main difference between the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 12 was the slanted placement of the camera lenses, while the 13 Pro differed less clearly from its predecessor with its larger camera lenses. That’s changing this year: Apple is saying goodbye to the notch introduced with the iPhone X in 2017 – the recess for the TrueDepth camera system for Face ID.

The Pro models no longer have a notch at the top of the display, instead the front cameras are in a hole in the display, similar to many Android models. So that it is small enough, the Android warehouse only installs simple front cameras at the front and largely dispenses with complex technology for face recognition, such as the iris scanner that is still installed in the Samsung Galaxy S9. Apple, on the other hand, is installing additional technology (infrared projector and sensors) for Face ID, so a small hole is not enough here. Instead, Apple uses a larger, oval opening for the front camera and Face ID technology.

Notifications build up around the oval opening with a black background – Apple calls the feature “Dynamic Island”. This way, notifications will also appear within apps at the top of the screen. Apple has announced that third-party developer apps will also be able to use the feature. In the first practical test, the implementation of the dynamic island notifications was impressive. Apple so cleverly embeds the oval opening in notification windows that it becomes practically invisible.

And After tapping on the notification, a mini window with its own operating functions, similar to a widget, appears in the case of appropriately adapted apps. This is how the music playback can be controlled. Up to two notifications can be displayed at the same time, then another, smaller, black overlay appears to the right of the familiar oval area – a sort of second sister island to the right of the main island.

The display in the iPhone 14 Pro OLED power with a lot of hertz

As in the previous year, the display is equipped with the latest OLED LTPO technology, which, in addition to crisp contrasts and great colors, above all enables variable control of the refresh rate between 1 and 120 Hertz. This means that moving or quickly scrolled content is displayed smoothly. With static content, the display saves power by turning down the Hertz number. In addition to iOS 16, the technology also ensures that Apple can finally introduce an always-on display mode exclusively for the Pro models without worrying too much about power consumption. The details with which Apple implemented the whole thing were impressive in the practical test: Unlike the Android competition, the always-on screen still shows colors, albeit with reduced brightness and adapted to the subject. And: An object placed on the lock screen slips behind the time on the always-on screen. Because the time display is particularly important in stand-by.

Only the Pro models have the A16 processor

In 2022, only the iPhone Pro models will actually get a really new processor: The Apple A16 Bionic celebrates its premiere here and gets faster memory and more neuronal performance, for example for image processing and artificial intelligence. The chip has a CPU with six cores and a GPU with five cores. According to Apple, the A16 processor consumes 20 percent less power, also because it was manufactured with 4 nm for the first time. And it’s on average 10 percent faster than its predecessor’s A15 Bionic, and even faster in some applications.

The camera: 48 megapixels in the iPhone 14 Pro

Because of the third camera for telephoto shots, many photo fans have always given preference to the Pro models. At the same time, larger and better camera sensors were used in the Pro devices in previous years. This year, Apple is taking a big step with the iPhone 14 Pro models, instead of the usual 12 megapixels, it is for the first time using a very high-resolution camera sensor with 48 megapixels and pixel binning, which has long been standard in the Android camp. This means: With the 48-megapixel sensor, the internal image processing combines four sensor pixels for an optimal result and more light output, so that in the end a 12-megapixel photo is saved. In addition, Apple uses the high-resolution sensor to get more details even for smaller zoom levels below the triple optical magnification of the telephoto lens. When zooming into the sensor, up to 2x enlargement is possible while still maintaining 12 megapixels.

In theory, the camera exploits the advantages of higher light output in weak light and high sharpness reserves in good lighting. Whether and in which situations this really pays off in better image quality is far from certain, it depends on the software, lenses and sensor quality and size. Only a test should really bring clarity here. The 48-megapixel camera is joined by a telephoto lens (12 megapixels) and an ultra wide-angle lens (12 megapixels).

Has the battery weakness been eliminated?

The iPhone 14 Pro should make you forget the battery weakness of the previous year’s model compared to the standard model. According to insider reports, the battery capacity increases by 3.4 percent to 3,200 mAh (mAh; predecessor 13 Pro: 3,095 mAh, iPhone 13: 3,227 mAh), which is still slightly lower than the iPhone 14 (3,279 mAh). But the difference is less clear than in 2021. The Max variant of the iPhone 14 Pro offers significantly more battery reserves with 4,323 mAh, even if this capacity is even a touch below that of its predecessor (4,352 mAh).

Traditionally, however, Apple does not reveal the actual battery capacities; they can only be checked after opening the case and disassembling the components. The effective battery life could still surpass that of the predecessor thanks to more efficient processors and a few energy-saving tricks. In any case, iPhones usually work more efficiently than comparable top Android smartphones.

iPhone 14 Pro Price and Storage

The Pro versions of the iPhone are more expensive in the 14 series than in the previous series: while the iPhone 13 Pro came onto the market with a starting price of 1,249 euros, the iPhone 14 Pro costs at least 1,299 euros, and the Max model comes at 150 euros EUR surcharge. A top model with 1 terabyte (TB) each is new – at 2,099 euros, the iPhone 14 Pro Max (1 TB) is the most expensive iPhone model to date. For comparison: With the normal iPhone 13 you were already there from 899 euros. The RRP are as follows:

  • iPhone 14 Pro: 1.299 Euro (128 GB), 1.429 Euro (256 GB), 1.689 Euro (512 GB), 1.949 Euro (1 TB)
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 1.449 Euro (128 GB), 1.579 Euro (256 GB), 1.839 Euro (512 GB), 2.099 Euro (1 TB)
